San Miguel de Allende Culinary Adventures:

The State of Guanajuato is part of the Table Land regions of Mexico; it is a magical State full of history, legend and tradition. Guanajuato's cities depict Mexican and European architecture. The lack of city and road planning many years ago turned out to be a happy mistake of cobblestone roads, bridges, tunnels, alleyways and labyrinths that amuse visitors and enhance the beauty of these majestic little towns and cities.

San Miguel de Allende is widely known for being a peaceful and safe city, for its great weather year round, its rich colonial and Gothic architecture, and believe it or not... for its expatriate population. People from the United States, Canada and Europe have found a permanent home in San Miguel. Foreigners have brought a great deal of themselves and their homelands, making this city extremely diverse and cultural.

Our Culinary Adventures to San Miguel are a week long and our point of arrival is the airport of Leon, Guanajuato. We are then transported to San Miguel de Allende and taken to Casa Crayola which will be our "home" for the duration of the trip.

Casa Crayola is a beautiful little hotel with a home-like feel that has 7 "casitas" (Spanish term for little houses) all of which have been exquisitely decorated in a fashionable Mexican style decor by owner Carly Cross. Each casita features cable TV, wireless Internet access, a kitchenette with microwave and small fridge, coffee maker and cooking utensils. The property has a beautiful courtyard with a fountain and the main house has a kitchen where we will typically hold our daily Hands-On Cooking Classes and a dining room in which to eat the delectably prepared meals after the classes.

Casa Crayola is a short walking distance from downtown and major shopping areas and there are several restaurants, internet cafes, bakeries, a convenience store, laundromats and pharmacies on the same street as the property.

San Miguel de Allende has a beautiful Artisans Market. This is a great spot to shop around for local handcrafts & knick-knacks to take back home. Likewise, the downtown area has stunning stores and art galleries, excellent restaurants, cafeterias and coffee shops that blend different cuisines and flavors from around the globe; making this one of the reasons we chose this fabulous location for our Culinary Adventures and Tours.

Our itinerary is planned to allow our traveler's to fully immerse themselves in the regional cuisines specific to Guanajuato, while still providing enough free time for them to venture out on their own. Once a day, we hold a Cooking Class in the industrial kitchen of Casa Crayola (breakfast, lunch or dinner). We further enhance this experience by shopping at the local food market for the ingredients and foods we will use to prepare our previously planned traditional menus.

We also make it a point to tour adjacent towns and cities such as Guanajuato (the capital city of the State) where we visit sites such as La Valenciana and San Ramon silver and gold mines, the monument to El Pipila ( a tribute to a humble miner whose courageous acts and selflessness are some of the most magnificent episodes in the history of Mexico), Las Momias de Guanajuato (the mummies exhibit), El Callejon del Beso (The Alley of the Kiss, location of a famous legend), Guanajuato's Basilica and other exciting places.

We will go on a day tour to Dolores Hidalgo, also known as the Cradle of Independence. We will stroll through the streets and plazas and visit the historic Parroquia de Dolores (Church of Dolores) where the Cry of Independence was given by father Hidalgo, event which would begin the movement of Independence. Also, Dolores Hidalgo has abundant tile and talavera factories that are glad to give tours of their facilities if requested.
But... our favorite perk to Dolores, and the reason  it makes it on our "A" list is: ice-cream. Ice-cream vendors line the plaza streets to sell their out-of-this-world creations with flavors as simple as: chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, lime, coconut, prickley pear, watermelon, melon, banana or maybe even fig, zapote, guanabana, and mamey (exotic tropical fruits), pineapple, green apple, pistachio & almonds, coffee, pine nuts and praline or the more unusual ones such as: tequila, eggnog, fried milk, horchata (rice water) or pulque (fermented drink)...how about cheese, peanut, avocado or corn? And then...there's the bizzzzzzzzzare: fried pork rind, fish and shrimp...octopus, anyone? This extensive ice-cream menu is sure to satisfy every palate.
